University College Hospitals London Charity in Central London has an exciting new complementary health initiative to support staff wellbeing as part of the hospital’s Covid recovery strategy. The UCLH 'Staff Spa' has delivered over 1,000 complementary therapy treatments provided by highly qualified volunteer therapists who donate 3 hours a week to the service. The Spa offers over 15 kinds of therapy. This has proven to be a successful way to introduce different therapies to hospital staff, many of whom have never experienced any kind of touch therapy before.

Additionally, we now have a ‘roving’ massage service enabling maximum accessibility for staff. Ward based therapists offer treatments of between 15 and 30 minutes and generally see between 6 to 12 staff members each visit.

There has been a rapid take-up of both these services with a high level of appreciation and feedback. Staff have said that it makes them feel more valued and that it has been very helpful to take time to engage in self-care, address a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, together with post Covid symptoms and burnout. Therapists, most of whom have never worked in the NHS, have found it a valuable professional and personal experience.
